Some countries have been conducting research on more efficient ways to harvest the suns energy for some time now, still getting their ingenuity from nature that's been around since the dinosaurs. Take the study on solar energy panels conducted with butterfly wings. They found that copying the designs from the scaled wings of butterflies will increase solar panel efficiency and capacity. The structures and patterns butterflies naturally on their wings are designed in such a way that they reflect the suns heat and energy back into the body to keep it warm. The study came out in a recent article in the Chemistry of Materials Journal. The study was conducted in Saga University, Saga, Japan.

Here's a link to a small article I put up about it...

Dear Birds of the World,
Thanks for some lovely extra pictures of the spangled cotinga. If other blog readers click on to their trackback there is also a nice little video taking you up the metal tower and along the metal walkway at Sacha Lodge in Amazonian Ecuador. It gives you an excellent feel for what it's like to be up in the top of the canopy in these wonderful lowland tropical forests.
Happy New Year

Dear Tim,
I'm glad I asked. Your diary entries for that day - detailing the wildlife extravaganza we were treated to - show just how much a few individuals in the right place at the right time can contribute to the preservation of the natural world - not to mention the ruination of our waist lines.
And I certainly remember the road into Hato Pinero. You drove the car while I walked or pushed.
As you say, what memories to help us through English winetr evenings.
Happy New Year
